How to put facebook rss feeds to twitter

August 9, 2007

Or any other feeds for that matter.

1.) Create a NEW twitter profile. I created http://twitter.com/myfeeds. Make it private.

2.) Head over to http://twitterfeed.com

3.) Use OpenId to log in. I have a Yahoo! email account which makes life easier.

4.) Click “Go to my twitter feeds (or create a new one)”

5.) Click “Create a new twitter feed”

6.) Type in your new twitter name and password.

7.) Paste the RSS feed link into “RSS Feed URL”

8.) Choose how often you want the feed to update. I chose every 30 mins and 5 updates.

9.) Tick the “Active” checkbox to enable the feed

10.) Click “Create”. You can add more feeds if need be. I have chosen the RSS feed for facebook notifications and friend status.

11.) Befriend the new profile to your regular twitter profile. If you made it private, you need to log into your new twitter account accept yourself to follow the tweets.

12.) That’s it? Need help? Stuck? Leave a comment with your twitter username and I’ll give you a hand if need be.

Enjoy!

Are User’s Ruining Pownce?

July 17, 2007

The other week, a flurry of activity occurred on the net relating to Kevin Rose’s new start-up, Pownce. Invites were being passed from inbox to inbox with the anticipation that this could be something very, very cool.

Since the hype has died down somewhat (perhaps too quickly), it is obvious that Pownce does not live up to expectations. Is it the concept? Is it the layout? To tell you the truth, I think it is the users.

Pownce and Twitter are similar in concept, that is – to share data with friends. Twitter has a firm and steady footprint on the internet already and if I wish to share a file, link or picture with fellow Twitterers, then I simply send out a tinyurl of the data I wish to share. No mess, no fuss. It may be breaking news (such as the Melbourne gunman) or weather anomalies. There are numerous 3rd party applications for twitter to help facilitate this. See here.

One thing that kinda pisses me off is how users use Pownce. (Does that make sense?). And they can make it or break it for other users. Twitter is like a stream-of-consciousness RSS feed of you and your friends. Thats cool. I can handle that. Steve may be “Walking the dog” or Larry may be “Furious at my boss”, yet with Pownce, do I really need an email sent to me informing me that Daniel posted “Yay for Tim-Tams” or Burritos for lunch!”.

Yes, yes, I know I can turn Pownce notifications off, if it is annoying me that much, but why the hell should I?

The way I look at it is that Pownce is good for sharing data, but for crying out loud people, post interesting stuff. I generally only post on Pownce once a day – and what I do post is generally the funniest or most informative or interesting link(s) I come across.

I have, on more than one occasion kicked off people from my friends list who use Pownce as a twitter-like application. It isn’t! That’s what twitter is for, people! Share decent links, files, hacks and cracks but for the love of god, keep your one-liners to Twitter.

Fair enough?

My twitter tips

July 10, 2007

If you use twitter, I’d just quickly like to share with you a few tips that I use to make the experience all the more enjoyable.

5. Use Twittermail.

Even though I don’t actually email tweets to my account, it is handy to sign up to this service thanks to their reply function. Basically, if anyone twitters your username, (eg @andrewsayer), Twittermail will send an email to your nominated address alerting you of a reply. I have picked up missed replies this way. Useful.

4. Use text message commands.

For some reason, the phone company I am with allows me to send 300 free text messages a month, even to international numbers. This is great for twittering in Australia. I have played around and discovered a few commands you can send to +447624801423.

GET – That will send the last couple of updates to your mobile via text. Useful if you think you missed something, or to test if twitter is working.

D (username) – Direct message. ‘Nuff said.

WHOIS (username) – Twitter will send to you a quick profile of the nominated user.

ON – Umm, turns messages on.

OFF – Umm, turns ‘em off.

3. Use Gtalk

If you download Gtalk and go to the settings page on twitter, you can use IM to send and receive the latest updates. I find it useful. It saves jumping back to twitter.com to check for updates. The only drawback I’ve found is that Gtalk won’t inform you if you have exceeded 140 characters.

2. Watch your mouth and don’t tweet anything nasty.

What you tweet today echoes for eternity in Google. There have been a few times I’ve fired off a tweet that I regret. I’ve noticed others too. You see, the thing is – once you have sent a tweet, you can always delete it from your twitter feed but you can’t remove it from a mobile phone in-box on the other side of the city. I’ve gotten text tweets on my mobile that I thought were, well, outlandish. When I’ve jumped on to Twitter to check it out, the user has deleted it. So be careful.

1. Update your avatars.

Every now and then it is refreshing to update and play around with your avatar. I do. It not only kills time when I’m waiting for the work experience kid to come back from the coffee shop with doughnuts, it is also something that other people will notice.

A Very Twitter Moment

May 29, 2007

TwitterLast Friday, I had a very twitter moment.

I was waiting at The Imperial Hotel for a friend to finish work. He was about 15 minutes away, so I decided to have a beer and wait. A few messages came in on my phone and one in particular got my attention.

“Back in melbourne at nudel bar, waiting for @M_e_l_i_s to turn up for birthday shennanigans”

“Whoa!”, I thought, “that’s just around the corner”. And it is. Literally. This map shows you.

I put to you, fellow twitterer, if it is someone you don’t know in real-life tweets and says they are 20 meters down the road waiting for a friend, do you take the leap from cyber-space to meat-space and introduce yourself.

Or is it too freaky? It is borderline stalking? I suppose I’ll have to wait and see if it happens again.

Sitting at home bored the other night, I devised a few pictures that I thought looked kind of cool for a twitter icon. Feel free to right-click and Save As…
