If you use twitter, I’d just quickly like to share with you a few tips that I use to make the experience all the more enjoyable.
5. Use Twittermail.
Even though I don’t actually email tweets to my account, it is handy to sign up to this service thanks to their reply function. Basically, if anyone twitters your username, (eg @andrewsayer), Twittermail will send an email to your nominated address alerting you of a reply. I have picked up missed replies this way. Useful.
4. Use text message commands.
For some reason, the phone company I am with allows me to send 300 free text messages a month, even to international numbers. This is great for twittering in Australia. I have played around and discovered a few commands you can send to +447624801423.
GET – That will send the last couple of updates to your mobile via text. Useful if you think you missed something, or to test if twitter is working.
D (username) – Direct message. ‘Nuff said.
WHOIS (username) – Twitter will send to you a quick profile of the nominated user.
ON – Umm, turns messages on.
OFF – Umm, turns ‘em off.
3. Use Gtalk
If you download Gtalk and go to the settings page on twitter, you can use IM to send and receive the latest updates. I find it useful. It saves jumping back to twitter.com to check for updates. The only drawback I’ve found is that Gtalk won’t inform you if you have exceeded 140 characters.
2. Watch your mouth and don’t tweet anything nasty.
What you tweet today echoes for eternity in Google. There have been a few times I’ve fired off a tweet that I regret. I’ve noticed others too. You see, the thing is – once you have sent a tweet, you can always delete it from your twitter feed but you can’t remove it from a mobile phone in-box on the other side of the city. I’ve gotten text tweets on my mobile that I thought were, well, outlandish. When I’ve jumped on to Twitter to check it out, the user has deleted it. So be careful.
1. Update your avatars.
Every now and then it is refreshing to update and play around with your avatar. I do. It not only kills time when I’m waiting for the work experience kid to come back from the coffee shop with doughnuts, it is also something that other people will notice.
